e-mail Blast: Value or SPAM?

Current Situation

In our information rich society, weather we asked for information or NOT, we are being horse whipped with information feeds: spam email, facebook and many unwanted messages from people we do not know.

What do we do? DELETE THEM. In fact we waste so much time deleting them that we do not have time to pay attention to important messages especially to important people.  We especially do not have time for those mails that we did not subscribe to. I am sure you delete them too.

Best practices for emailing so you are HAM and not SPAM:

  • Only write to people who subscribe and do not buy list or spam your friend.
  • Send newsletters on a consistent basis so it expected and not out of the blue
  • Add something of value to the users.  Something they can use.
  • Give the user an experience, some knowledge to make them say “Ah HA…” or laugh out loud.

Benefits of a valued message

  • recipients read it
  • it is shared
  • people act on the information for their benefit

See the an example of how this is done correctly:

  1. discounts for customers
  2. valued location listings to subscribers who opted in
  3. stats that tell which are popular events
  4. galleries of past events
  5. send every Thursday so it is a predictable regular schedule of delivery

eg of past Guide book and delivered weekly for over 10 years.
