The Value Of Content

“On the Web, we want to do things. Content enables us to do these things. Increasingly, the value of Content is measured in what it enables us to do. In and of itself, Content is of declining value. In other words, people don’t want to pay for Content if they can avoid it. But they need Content to help them make good decisions about other stuff they want to buy. Content is the lubricant of e-commerce,” says Gerry McGovern. The web is made of Content.

The web is a cult of volume, mainly where content producers have generally run wild. If you cannot find what you are looking for, the Content can quickly become clutter.

WHAT YOU CAN USE THE CONTENT FOR DETERMINES THE VALUE OF CONTENT. CONTENT IS THERE TO HELP US COMPLETE A TASK.

If we are cooking, then a receipt is helpful to help us complete our meal. If we are booking an airline ticket, then the flight schedule will help us coordinate our plans.

“I never advise clients to focus on the Content. A content focus generally leads to dead ends and a whole raft of bad practice. Focus on the customer instead and what they want to do.” – Marissa Mayer (Yahoo.com)

Content will generally be there to either entertain or to educate. If you are reading this Content for entertainment, then your task is laughter. The Content’s presentation still needs to be organized to deliver the punchline. “Timing” is the key to a good joke, and that in the digital web means finding the right data at the right-click. We want to find data.

Simplicity is about removal. To simplify, you have to take away. But, as Cohen and Stewart point out, “The advantage you gain by simplification either has to be so good that you don’t mind or (more likely) the thing you’ve removed has already become obsolete.… Most of the time, complicating development is, paradoxically, simpler than simplifying it. … In a complex structure, tweaking and fussing, adding quality control or bells and whistles, has a much better chance of giving a competitive edge than does simplification.”

Digital curation is the selection[1]preservation, maintenance, collection, and archiving of digital assets. Digital curation is the future. Life continues to be a selection of the best choices.

  1. So the concept of more is less might apply in this case. However content is so tricky in that if you have info that is not relevant people will shy away from your site.
